Our firm was commissioned to do the interior design for the Alice Erving Residence built in 1951 by architect Lutah Maria Riggs. The single story, 3,500 sf house is located on a magnificent 4 acre site in Montecito, California. The residence was originally conceived as a “tent within the landscape” utilizing expansive sheets of glass. A continuity of materials between inside and outside connect the house to the exterior and landscape.
The strategy was to use no more furniture, furnishings or free standing objects than necessary and let the original intent of the project remain intact or possibly strengthen it. Objects are placed within the house strategically to maintain this relationship.
